Resolution Recap

Well, the first quarter of the year is over (wow, my day job has clearly brainwashed me because I don’t think I used to think about a year broken up by quarters) and I’m reviewing the resolutions I made for 2014 (see my resolutions post here).

Let’s recap my original resolutions:

1. De-stress — mediate 10 mins every day

2. Get fit — move 30 mins every day

3. Eat healthy — eat 3 cups of veggies

4. Get more sleep — get ready for bed at 10 pm on weeknights

Wellllllll… life got in the way a bit on these.  My January and February weren’t too bad, but March is the busiest month of the year at work and all of these took a backseat.  I’m starting fresh again for April.

Dieting, Detox and Willpower – and why I’m done with it all

It’s spring (hooray!) and that means my inbox, facebook, pinterest and twitter feeds are littered with talk of detoxes, cleanses and dropping the winter weight.  In the past, I may have thought about trying one out, but this year — I’m done.

The idea of a detox doesn’t appeal to me anymore.  I’ve tried them — a few different ones, sometimes multiple times — because I thought I could benefit from them.  But now my mind automatically rejects the restrictiveness.  I don’t want to replace the foods I love with foods I don’t feel like eating (or drinks I don’t feel like drinking).

I always prided myself on my willpower.  If there was a cookie in front of me and I was on an “I’m not eating cookies” diet, I could easily resist the cookie.  The problem was when I stopped eating more than just cookies.

It started slowly, I would just cut out what I deemed “unhealthy.”  I never liked soda, so that was always out.  I stopped using Continue reading

This past Friday was National Wear Red Day to bring attention to heart disease – the number 1 cause of death for women. When people say heart disease (or cardiovascular disease or coronary heart disease) they could be describing a number of problems that can happen when plaque builds up on the walls of your arteries.
