Sleep Study — Part II (the sleep test and results)

Sleep study 2 | KellysRevival.com

It has been quite a while since my last post!  If you remember, I took a sleep test a few months ago (Sleep Study — Part 1).  I met with the RN to discuss my results, but first, I want to tell you a little more about the test itself and what it was like to have a sleep test.

I arrived at the Sleep Center at 8pm to check in and to give the techs time to hook me up to all the wires before bedtime.  I loved that the rooms were set up like hotel rooms and not hospital rooms so it didn’t feel so clinical.  My sleep test, also called a polysomnography (PSG), was set up to measure brain function (EEG), eye movements (EOG), muscle movements (EMG), heart rhythm (EKG), pulse and mouth and nose airflow.

Luckily, after you’re hooked up to all of the wires, you’re not strapped in for the night.   Continue reading

Sleep Study — Part 1

Isn’t it creepy if someone watches you sleep?

Not tonight!  My heart rate, brain waves, REM and more will be monitored in a sleep study.

I’ve never really had an issue falling asleep or staying asleep but I’m a pretty fidgety sleeper.  I kick and thrash about and sometimes my whole body jolts right when I’m about to fall asleep.  I’ve talked in my sleep most of my life and my roommates in college told me that I laugh in my sleep.  I occasionally wake up and catch myself in the middle of sleep talking, which is an odd feeling.  (Am I still dreaming?  Did I say that out loud?)  During my really bad bouts of (stress-induced?) eczema, I scratched my legs and arms in my sleep.  Sometimes I would Continue reading

Resolution Recap

Well, the first quarter of the year is over (wow, my day job has clearly brainwashed me because I don’t think I used to think about a year broken up by quarters) and I’m reviewing the resolutions I made for 2014 (see my resolutions post here).

Let’s recap my original resolutions:

1. De-stress — mediate 10 mins every day

2. Get fit — move 30 mins every day

3. Eat healthy — eat 3 cups of veggies

4. Get more sleep — get ready for bed at 10 pm on weeknights

Wellllllll… life got in the way a bit on these.  My January and February weren’t too bad, but March is the busiest month of the year at work and all of these took a backseat.  I’m starting fresh again for April.

Four ways I will accomplish my goals:

It’s a New Year – will there also be a New You?

Wow – can you believe it’s almost February?!

It’s hard not to think of January 1st as a new beginning.  That one day, although it may appear to be just like any other, can mean we’re starting fresh.  Clean slate.  Forget what happened last year, it’ll be different THIS year.

I always think making resolutions at the start of a new year will get me motivated.  But a few weeks later, the sentiment of the New Year is gone, I’m back to my old routine and I forgot what I was going to be resolute about.

Why does this happen?  I had such high hopes, but was I setting myself up for success? Continue reading
